Sugar Shane Mosley shocks Manny Pacquiao, former promoter Kushner says

Diogenes, he and his crusty, flickering lamp, trudged from street to street, from byway to back alley to broad avenues in ancient Athens in his perpetual search for the truly honest man.

I don't know, frankly, that Diogenes ever met a truthteller in his quest but my own personal search as to the Sugar Shane Mosley-Manny Pacquiao welterweight title bout May 7 at the MGM Grand Hotel ended on 8 East at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan late Friday afternoon.

There, recovering from a serious pair of spinal and back surgeries but with an unflagging spirit, I encountered the solitary man of boxing, the only fistic figure I know of who actually picks 39 year old underdog Mosley to shock Pacquiao and the world.

His name is Cedric Kushner and, as a former promoter of Mosley's, he has great intimacy with his subject.

"I could say that, yes absolutely, Shane has a chance to win," the head of Gotham Boxing said as he pounded down a Diet Coke sans his usual Rose's Lime Juice.

(Kushner's medical rehab is moving ahead with vigor and he's sniffing the flowers thoughtful old pal and fight promoter Kathy Duva sent up.)

"But I will go further than that. I'm picking Shane to win this fight. He's been one of the great fighters of his generation and he retains his power. I also think that this might be the time, might be the fight where as great as Manny is and has been, he's going to impacted negatively from fighting a bigger man," the mustachioed South African native said.

"On the other hand, you ask me if Pacquiao can stop Shane? I'd say that Manny can stop anybody but Shane takes a helluva rap, he's always had a solid chin. Sure, Manny is more than capable of hurting Shane but the opposite is also true.

"I don't wish to speak in riddles so I'll make it plain. I am picking Shane to win this fight over Pacman." Kushner said.

A young Mosley, along with his trainer father Jack, hooked up with Kushner when the Pomona, Ca., fighter was already a 16-0 lightweight.

The 60 year old Kushner said LA boxing man Tom Loeffler, now running the American side of the K2 promotional group for the Klitschko Brothers, brought him together with Sugar Shane and Captain Jack.

"I promoted Kevin Kelley, who Tom managed, and he was peripherally involved with the Mosleys. Jack and Shane flew to New York, we made a deal and I got Shane three solid tune up type bouts. Then, as I promised them, I got him an IBF title shot against Phillip Holliday of South Africa.

"Shane got his first world title and we were rolling along."

Pacquiao's Quick Feet---Mosley's Pain (in the neck)

Adding Manny's scalp to Shane's list of knockout victims is captivating to the former three-division bigwig who deals his ace on May 7th (Saturday) in a crucial bid to grab Pacquiao's WBO welterweight hat.

It is financially attractive, what with a paycheck worth millions of dollars complemented by substantial ancillary revenues.

Enough to spur Shane to a mind-boggling upset of the favored PacMan?

Adequate to startle the current pound for pound elite? He with that express delivery of metallic punches and one who almost-always succeed in slowing down rivals showing ring savvy in the heat of battle?

Sugar Shane Mosley has to stop Manny Pacquiao or he's deadmeat (to borrow a hackneyed street talk.)

That's his only route to victory since Manny is just too nimble for Mosley.

Pundits suggests that Sugar has a serious chance of beating the Pacquiao owing to his workmanlike versatility.

Not to mention he's at home as an easy welterweight. No weight woes. No extra poundage to shed.No sweat at all.

Yet, no one can bail the L.A.-- born Shane if he blows this one out.

Not his current employer, Top Rank's Bob Arum or his former co-workers at Golden Boy Promotions.

Just his lonesome against the best there is.

Hopeless to salvage his latest stab at greatness?

Not even if Flash Pomona is able to solve the riddle behind the Libyan leader's confounding name?

Unlikely for Mosley to dethrone Pacquiao unless he has new jolts to shock Sarangani puncher,

Shane's urgent wish for now is for redemption from six setbacks.

That can happen if he gets lucky, a week from today at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. nearly put the hall-bound Mosley on the extreme edge of retirement in their May 1st meeting of 2010.

But that washout followed by a desultory draw with Sergio Mora has not slowed down Shane a bit.

The one-time global attraction is in a recovery mood, plugging all stops to reclaim his once lofty perch.

The Pomona resident was, in his prime, the boss of lightweights, junior welterweights and welterweights.

Fact is, he was Oscar de la Hoya's headsman, beating the Golden Boy twice until the compelling PacMan arrived to drive in ODLH's retirement nail.

Pacquiao closes out the stringent phase of his workouts pleased with a sound camp. (Some 100 rounds of hard sparring, obstinate mountain climbing, unbending gym exercises, willful crooning before retiring for the evening) etcetera..

He departs by bus for Vegas ( Monday) well-informed of what Mosley has in his playbook.

Armed with tips and tapes of Shane's fights, Roach and company poured in substantial number of hours reading Mosley's attributes and weaknesses.

"The best training ever for Manny"--- Freddie Roach.

"Both Manny and Shane in excellent shape. Expect a pretty good show " he added.

The freshman sluggin' solon is chompin' at the bit as he whips up for a strenuous 12 rounder with a desperate Mosley.

On the eve of Pacquiao's departure for Nevada's Sin City, Roach was ecstatic in baring a great camp had by all to include Manny's cooks, masseuse, wannabe comedians (stand up or otherwise), off-key singers posing as guards and no notes side-splitting musicians.

"Manny knows what he's looking for in the battleplans of the opposite camp" ---deputy trainer Buboy Fernandez.

And that will make all the difference in the stored world title fight airing live on SHOWTIME-CBS.

A Pacquiao Victory Over Mosley Will Yield More Questions Than Answers

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Many people predict that a victory for Manny Pacquiao on May 7 is almost a foregone conclusion. If this is the case, then Boxing Dispatch takes a look at the questions that will be asked in the fall-out of such an event and why there are more questions than answers.

Why is Manny Pacquiao such a heavy favorite?

For many a victory for Manny Pacquiao on May 7 seems almost inevitable. Out go the cries that Shane Mosley is old, slow(er) and a shadow of the man who ruled the lightweight and welterweight division the previous decade. Some of this is understandable. Mosley was slowly tenderized by Floyd Mayweather for ten rounds, while his fight against Sergio Mora was positively interminable. Manny Pacquiao meanwhile won a belt in a record eighth division and booked Antonio Margarito into a reconstructive plastic surgery appointment. One fighter is being called by many to retire, while the other is facing calls to hold off such talk for as long as possible.

Who does Manny Pacquiao fight next?

According to widespread reports a formal offer was made to Juan Manuel Marquez to face Manny Pacquiao in the fall. After many years as a Golden Boy fighter Marquez is now a free-agent, and more crucially Marquez is free from Golden Boy, the bitter enemy of Pacquiao’s promoter Top Rank. Marquez has been campaigning for a third fight with Pacquiao for the past two years and with good reason. The first fight was ruled a draw, while the second was ruled narrowly in Pacquiao’s favor. However both were seen to be victories for Marquez in many quarters, and both were seen as ‘Fight of the Year’ contenders. The only stumbling block for Marquez now is that Golden Boy has an option to match any offer that Marquez may receive. Marquez has likely turned down a summer fight with Zab Judah to avoid jeopardizing a fight with Pacquiao in the autumn.

If not Marquez then who else can Pacquiao fight?

For a while now Amir Khan, Manny Pacquiao’s stablemate at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym has been on a collision course with Timothy Bradley in the junior welterweight division. Bradley has been offered the fight with Khan, but apparently the money is not right. Cameron Dunkin (Bradley’s manager) and Gary Shaw, (Bradley’s promoter) seem to differ on the financials. Bradley’s promotional deal with Shaw comes to an end in July. Does that free him up for a fight with Pacquiao in the fall should the Marquez fight fall through?

What happens to Shane Mosley?

As court papers revealed in December 2010, ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley’s life is not that sweet. His alimony payments to ex-wife Jin were listed as $20,000 a month. Shane also gave up his equity stake in Golden Boy Promotions to face Pacquiao also. Despite calls from many quarters it look like Mosley will fight on regardless. Shane might be past his best, but as Bob Arum explained once, he is a ‘name’, and a name that can still pay it’s way in the boxing game.

Will Manny Pacquiao fight Floyd Mayweather?

That ships looks like it sailed a while ago, with no one on board as both sides laid blame on each other. Drug tests or no drug tests Mayweather is embroiled in a legal case and is happy to spend his time with 50 Cent. Pacquiao meanwhile is juggling political office, a pop career, acting oh, and yes some boxing.

Chasing the knockout against Mosley a risky move for Pacquiao

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Just over a week away from Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley and the talk among many fans isn't who will win, but whether or not the Filipino can become the first fighter to finish the veteran American.

Speaking on a Top Rank conference call earlier this week, Manny Pacquiao himself didn't seem at all concerned with knocking Mosley out, stating:

"I'm not focused on the knockout, but we just work hard. If the knockout comes, then it comes. You know, we prepared ourselves that we're fighting 12 rounds"

It isn't known for sure of course what Pacquiao's tactics will be on the night, several different press quotes recently have him both standing toe to toe and picking Mosley off from a distance.

Similarly various interviews have Mosley forcing Pacquiao to go on the defensive while others have him counterpunching, so until the bout starts we won't know for sure.

Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach however was much more upbeat on the subject of going for the knockout, and has also predicted a knockout over Mosley several times in the past.

"Shane's a tough guy and a very durable guy and it would be a great feather in Manny's cap to be able to stop him and to just prove to the world how much better he is than that other guy that couldn't stop him"

Pacquiao tends to be reserved when discussing his opponents and what he hopes to achieve in the ring. Roach however is the man making the game plans for Pacquiao to carry out, and by the sounds of things he is looking for a knockout.

Roach was of course referring to Floyd Mayweather as the 'other guy', who in May of last year dominated Mosley over 12 rounds but failed to stop him, despite wobbling him in the later rounds.

The reason that Mayweather didn't go in for the kill, other than not ever being known as an overly aggressive fighter, is likely that even as tired and beaten down as Mosley was, his speed and power were still a risk.

Pacquiao isn't looking past Mosley

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
LOS ANGELES -- Only one thing is certain in Manny Pacquiao's future: On May 7, he will fight Shane Mosley in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, in his final days in Los Angeles preparing for his match to be held at the MGM Grand, refuses to talk past Mosley, although he acknowledged Tuesday he would not back out from a Juan Manuel Marquez fight right after this one.

"There is a big possibility," said Pacquiao, 33, shortly before a training session at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Boxing Club in Beverly Hills. "That is what [Top Rank promoter] Bob Arum says, that we are fighting with Marquez. I would like that fight to happen."

Pacquiao, the WBO welterweight champ who has won 10 belts in eight classes during his pro career, has faced Marquez twice, scoring a draw in the first showdown in 2004 and escaping with a 12-round split decision in 2008.

Richard Schaefer, president of Oscar De la Hoya-owned Golden Boy Promotions, an occasional partner with Arum to promote fights, told ESPN.com's Dan Rafael that promoter Top Rank has made an offer for a Marquez-Pacquiao showdown.

But Roach, Pacquiao's trainer, said even though a couple of names have been bounced around, there has been no final word on whom Pacquiao will face after Mosley, 39.

Roach would love to see a rematch with Antonio Margarito, whom his protégé beat in November 2010 via unanimous decision.

"Margarito, I think, is the natural next opponent," Roach said. "He deserves the rematch. They had two very good fights; he thinks he won both of those. He's a real thinker, and that's the fight I would like to see."

What about Floyd Mayweather, who was close to fighting Pacquiao about a year ago until a disagreement over drug-testing protocol tabled the bout?

"Right now, I don't have any idea about that fight because right now I'm very focused on this fight with Mosley," said Pacquiao, who has three losses in his 57-bout career. "I think we will talk about that after the fight."

While talk about a possible match with Mayweather still exists, Pacquiao continues training for his May 7 compromise with Mosley, who lost in May 2010 to Mayweather via unanimous decision and then drew with Sergio Mora later that year.

"I think Shane Mosley is a very good fighter. He didn't look that great on his last two fights because of the styles he fought," said Roach, a former boxer. "You look at his last good fight, when he fought Margarito, he looked great in that fight. He kind of surprised the world by beating him up, and Shane loves people that attack him and Manny Pacquiao is one of those guys that will attack."

Pacquiao said he has focused on speed and styles since his training camp started and that he will be ready for anything Mosley will offer him.

"He has a different style compared to Margarito or somebody else," said Pacquiao. "I'm not worried about that. When we fight, I'm ready for that. My condition is good, but I don't want to underestimate Mosley because he is also bigger than me and he is also a good fighter."

Pacquiao, who is a congressman representing the Sarangani province in his native Philippines and is also a professional singer, insists that those things don't have any effect on his training or his performance in the ring.

"It's just finding the time … Pacquiao time!" he said with a laugh. "If you love your work and manage your time, you can do everything."

Roach said when the time comes to step in the ring, Pacquiao's focus is solely on boxing.

"From day one he's been so motivated for this fight," Roach said. "We had the best start we've ever had, I think this might be the best training camp we ever had … he's just in phenomenal shape right now."

If, as expected, Pacquiao beats Mosley, he said his only goal will be spending some quality time with his family.

"After this fight I'm going back to [the] Philippines and go back to work … and dedicate time to my family," Pacquiao said.

Paradox of Manny Pacquiao

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Sometimes it is still hard for me to believe that the same guy I met ten years ago at the Wildcard Boxing Club, who smiled and made sure he would say hi to everyone, that it is the same guy that battered Miguel Cotto into submission two years ago, that is the same Manny that gave me a signed autographed glove to auction off for an ill child in Chicago who also knocked out Ricky Hatton with such a violent force that made his fiancé cry and many in the arena wonder if Ricky would ever get up. That is the paradox of boxing super star/congressman, Manny Pacquiao.

“My concern is how to make people happy,” said eight division world champion, Pacquiao during Los Angles press conference. He will get a chance to do just that when he defends his welterweight crown and a pound for pound number one ranking against Sugar Shane Mosley on May 7th in Las Vegas.

People love him for his genuine kindness, like adapting down on their luck fighters and opening his home to them, feeding the hungry or giving away money to people in Philippines, but make no mistake, the same people crave his relentless violence in the squared circle.

“He is a punching machine!” exclaimed a boxing fan in Glendale when asked what he thought about Manny Pacquiao. In turn, the punching machine, Pacman almost sounds apologetic after every fight. “It’s nothing personal,” said Pacquiao after he battered Antonio Margarito for twelve rounds and broke his eye socket:” I am just doing my job.”

His job is to produce extreme carnage in the ring. His next assignment is Shane Mosley.“I’m excited for this fight because Mosley can throw a lot of punches and he wants to fight toe-to-toe, said Pacquiao during a telephone conference yesterday:” Mosley, he’s former pound-for-pound champion and he’s a good fighter, and a comeback fighter also.”

True to his nature Pacquiao never talks bad about his opponents.“Shane Mosley is still very strong and he moves more like he’s 30 years old. He’s the kind of fighter who is bigger than me. Pound-for-pound he’s still good,” said Pacquiao, 32: “This fight is bigger than the Margarito fight because Mosley moves fast and he has good speed and power. That’s what I want. He throws a lot of punches. It will be good for us and it will be a good fight.”

Most pundits believe that Manny will simply be too much for aging warrior Mosley. In fact, Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza said that Manny would start breaking Shane Mosley down by the fifth round. Ever so humble warrior, Manny Pacquiao has another take on the task ahead: “We’re not focused for the knockout. All we do is work hard and if the knockout comes, it comes. We’ve prepared ourselves for fighting 12 rounds.” That is the essence of the pride of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao.

“When I think of what I have accomplished in boxing I’m amazed,” continued Pacquiao over the telephone:” It’s more than I ever dreamed. It’s kind of amazing, and it’s because of my hard work. But that’s my job – to work hard.”

Manny Pacquiao versus Shane Mosley

Rafael

Rafael: OK, so Pacquiao and Mosley are fighting on May 7 for Pacquiao's welterweight title. This version of Mosley is 39, near the end of his career and coming off two horrible performances. Mosley is a proud fighter who still possesses heart, a great chin and good power (in his one moment of note against Floyd Mayweather Jr., he almost knocked him out in the second round). It is not inconceivable that he can land a punch on Pacquiao, who gets hit quite a bit, the way he did against Mayweather and change the fight. But this version of Mosley is slower and simply can't pull the trigger with authority on his punches.

Now, if we're talking about the prime welterweight Mosley of around 2000, or even the supreme lightweight champion Mosley of the late 1990s -- who had concussive power (eight knockouts in eight defenses) and insane speed (hands and feet) -- it would undoubtedly be a different, and far more competitive, fight. I could see the lightweight version of Mosley or the Mosley who outfought a prime Oscar De La Hoya for the welterweight title in 2000 having a great chance to defeat Pacquiao, be it by knockout or decision. That would be one helluva fight to watch.

Mulvaney

Mulvaney: Mosley does a lot of things very, very well. He doesn't do any of them better than Pacquiao -- with the possible exception of carrying greater one-punch power. He has a longer reach, but he fails to utilize it effectively, deploying a jab that is little more than a range-finder and loading up on big right hands. Those right hands loop in from the side instead of coming straight down the middle, where they would be more effective against Pacquiao's high guard. Pacquiao will see them coming, slide to his right, duck under them and unleash his left. It'll be close and exciting for a few rounds until Pacquiao takes over, pounding Mosley down the stretch en route to a unanimous decision.

Tessitore

Tessitore: Pacquaio is faster than this older edition of Shane Mosley. He's viper-like with his quick-striking left cross and right hook. He will land with ease against Mosley. There will be moments when Shane makes Manny think about his ability to mix it up with him, and he could even hurt PacMan with a body shot or uppercut. In the end, I see very few scenarios that include Mosley pulling off the upset. Pacquiao by late TKO.

Kenny

Kenny: Against Mosley in his prime? I'll say it would be Pacquaio by decision. Unfortunately, Manny isn't even facing a prime Mosley this spring.

Pacquiao and Mosley could be fireworks!

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
The general consensus is that Manny Pacquiao will defeat Shane Mosley on May 7th. Many of the fans are thinking this, but not everybody. I have spoken with several professional fighters over the past few weeks, and most of them feel as if Mosley may do much better than people are thinking.

Shane Mosley didn't do so well Vs. Mayweather, but he did hurt him pretty bad in the 2nd round. When Mosley fought Mora, he didn't look great but he was fighting a 6ft2 guy that fights like a 5ft2 guy. Mora makes everyone look bad when they fight him. So what could this all mean? Well, its a possibility that Shane has more in the tank than what some people think. But his last two performances were against awkward guys.

On the other hand, Manny Pacquiao continues to steamroll his opponents. He overwhelms his opponents with blistering speed and face busting power. If anyone doubts what Manny Pacquiao can do to a human face, take a look at Antonio Margarito's face the day after he fought him.

If it is true that Mosley isn't all washed up, he could present Pacquiao with some issues. He's fast and he does have some power as well. I am curious as to how Manny will handle Mosley's power. If Mosley rocks him like he rocked Mayweather it could be an interesting night.

LISTEN to what Pacquiao had to say in a new Podcast HERE

One thing is for certain, neither guy likes to retreat. Mosley loves to stand in there and engage his opponents. Pacquiao doesn't mind exchanging blows either. However, I'm guessing that Freddie Roach has told Manny not to stand inside and go punch for punch with Mosley. I don't think that would be too smart. Pacquiao will more than likely use angles and speed, he will get in and get out.

This very possibly could be a much better fight than people think. If I was a betting man, I would bet on Manny Pacquiao in this one. I wouldn't bet everything though.

I spoke with a few fans in Mississippi and got their thoughts on the big fight.

Kevin Spahn of Clinton, MS - "Mosley could end up surprising a few folks. I think he's got more to give."

James Clifton of Canton, MS - "Pacquiao should cruise. He's too fast and he's just too good."

Danny Gotlieb of Star, MS - "Pacman all day on this one. He's faster, and more in his prime."

Steven Brooks of Brandon, MS - "This is a toss up fight. I would not be surprised to see Mosley pull off an upset."

Pacquiao and trainer sing different tune on a Mosley KO

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Manny Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach expressed contrasting views on Wednesday when discussing the possibility of a knockout by the Filipino in his title bout next week with American Shane Mosley.

While Pacquiao said a knockout had not been a specific focus during their preparations over the last two months, Roach felt stopping an opponent was the perfect way to end a fight.

Mosley, 46-6-1 with 39 knockouts, has yet to be knocked out during his professional career and Roach has set his sights on Pacquiao becoming the first boxer to achieve the feat.

"I think all fights should end in knockouts so I am looking for a knockout," Roach said on a conference call with the Filipino southpaw.

"Shane is a tough guy and a very durable guy and it would be a feather in Manny's cap to be the first one to stop him. It would just prove to the world how much better he is than that other guy (Floyd Mayweather) that couldn't stop him."

Eleven months ago, Mayweather resisted a furious early onslaught by Mosley to preserve his unbeaten professional record with an unanimous points victory in a welterweight bout in Las Vegas.

Mayweather has not fought since and boxing fans would dearly love to see the American go into the ring against Pacquiao to decide the mythical title of the world's best pound-for-pound fighter.

For the time being, though, Pacquiao and his trainer are fully focused on the WBO welterweight title fight against veteran Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 7.

"Manny will fight at a fast pace and I don't know if Shane is going to be prepared to fight at that pace," Roach said of the Filipino who has been installed as an odds-on favorite by Las Vegas bookmakers.

"But we are going to force the action and we are going to go for it (a knockout) this time. If it comes, it comes. I think Manny is definitely the guy to do it."

Pacquiao, already established as one of the best offensive fighters of all time with a career record of 52-3-2 with 38 knockouts, was reluctant to talk about his chances of stopping Mosley.

KNOCKOUT FOCUS

"We are not very focused on the knockout," the 32-year-old said. "If the knockout comes, it will come. We have prepared ourselves that we are fighting 12 rounds."

Asked how much it would mean to him to become the first fighter to stop Mosley, Pacquiao replied: "I would be excited for that. My concern right now is the fight that we can give to the people and to the fans. I want them to be happy."

Pacquiao will be fighting for the first time since November when he outclassed Mexican Antonio Margarito in Dallas to land an eighth world title in an unprecedented eighth weight class.

For all the talk that he should brush aside the threat posed by three-division world champion Mosley, the Filipino southpaw is not taking his 39-year-old opponent lightly.

"Shane Mosley is still strong and he moves like a 29-year-old or a 30-year-old," Pacquiao said. "He is the kind of fighter that you cannot underestimate. He is bigger than me and stronger and of course he is a former pound-for-pound champion. He is still good."

Mosley did not thrive in his last two bouts - dropping a unanimous decision to Mayweather in May and drawing with Sergio Mora in September -- but Roach believes the American suffered against opponents renowned for their ultra-defensive style.

"We are looking at his fight against Margarito, a guy that attacks and not those two runners that he (Mosley) had a little bit of difficulty with," said Roach.

In his third-last bout, Mosley claimed the WBA welterweight title with a stunning ninth round stoppage of Margarito at the Staples Center in Los Angees in January 2009.

"In the Margarito fight, he looked great and Margarito has an aggressive style like Manny," Roach added.

"And the way we are going to attack him (Mosley) is going to be a little more scientific of course. We are ready for the best Shane Mosley out there."

Breaking down Pacquiao and Mosley's strategy: His defense is his offense

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Some thing's are easier said than done. Pardon me. Make that, "more" things, are easier said than done. Like say, to beat the Los Angeles Lakers, you need to shut them down on defense. Hooray! Gold star! Way to go Sherlock Holmes. If only it were that simple.

So I read a report by our friend, ABS-CBN North America correspondent Steve Angeles about Shane Mosley's strategy to force Manny Pacquiao to go on the defensive. Angeles wrote: "In a telephone conference call with the media recently, Mosley said he'll force the usually aggressive Pacman to become a defensive fighter by landing the big punches early. Mosley, who knocked out Pacquiao's last foe Antonio Margarito in 2009, is confident he has enough speed to upset the Pacman. “I know Margarito landed the most punches ever on Manny Pacquiao. So if Margarito is fast enough to land punches on Manny Pacquiao, then I know I'm fast enough to land punches on Manny Pacquiao,” the 39 year-old American said."

I got me thinking, how can Mosley force Pacquiao to go on the defensive. I see how Mosley can land punches here and there. Pacquiao invites exchanges for him to land his, and during the Margarito fight, he allowed himself to be backed against the ropes where he endured most of the punches Margarito landed.

Novel as the idea sounds, but forcing Pacquiao to go on the defensive is actually a strategy that has historically failed. Take a look back at Pacquiao's opponents who tried to force the offensive dynamo back like the aforementioned Margarito, Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and David Diaz to name a few.

The strategy that works against Pacquiao is precise counterpunching mixed with some aggression. In other words: Juan Manuel Marquez. The things that worked against Marquez were his chin, and that he could've used a little bit more punching power. Remember the latter parts of round two during their rematch? Marquez landed a perfect left hook that almost dropped Pacquiao. How Pacquiao managed to stay on his feet, is a tribute to his chin. But imagine if the more powerful puncher in Mosley lands a similar shot? Mosley too has a stronger chin than Marquez, and is used to taking harder shot from bigger men.

Mosley is not a counterpuncher like Marquez

True. Mosley isn't anywhere near the counterpuncher Marquez is. He doesn't need to be. I thought Joshua Clottey was employing a smart strategy when he managed to block and deflect most of Pacquiao's punches when they fought. The only problem was, Clottey never punched back. If you watch the tapes closely, Pacquiao was getting tired and careless towards the latter parts of the fight. I thought Clottey would pour on his offense towards the last 4 rounds and see if he could take advantage of Pacquiao getting tired and make him pay when he got careless. Clottey landed cleanly when he did throw back, but for some reason, he did chose not to do more of it. That's the problem with Clottey though. He did the same thing when he lost to Miguel Cotto. He doesn't have that killer instinct. He had that fight won, but instead of closing it strong in the last couple of rounds, he allowed Cotto to steal them. If Mosley can employ a similar defensive strategy, but capitalizing on the instances that Pacquiao leaves himself open after wild punches, or coming in carelessly, he has a shot of dropping Pacquiao late in the fight.

I'm not a big stats guy, but I saw this post by leo_solis from sbnation.com which reflects exactly what I'm referring to about regarding Pacquiao using his offense as his defense. "Looking at the stats from his last 11 fights, Pac has averaged 78 thrown punches per round, landing 28 (24 of them power punches) of them, while his opponents only throw 46 while landing 11 per round thats a 24% connect against. That means per round Pac lands 2.2 punches per punch his opponents land on him. Mosley on the other hand only lands 1.32. If you look at power punches things look even worse for Mosley, since Pac lands 2.75 power punches for each one of his opponents (no one has a better ratio here than Pac), while Mosley only 1.33.

Mosley don’t see regrets in fighting Pacquiao

HOLLYWOOD — Shane Mosley knows that at 39, he's only as good as his last fight goes.

That's why the former three-division champion vows to pour everything he's got in his May 7 showdown with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

He said he had erased the words "what if" from his vocabulary.

“There's not too many more fights on the horizon,” said Mosley during his conference call on Tuesday. “Each and every fight is very important. I have to make sure that when I leave the fight, there's no regrets.”

So Mosley guarantees to give 100 percent, or muster whatever is left in his arsenal, when he tries to wrest Pacquiao's World Boxing Organization welterweight crown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Despite the 6-1 odds for Pacquiao, Mosley earnestly believes he has a good chance of ending the Filipino's 13-bout winning streak since 2005 and vaulting back on top of the world's elite boxers.

Having watched and then seen the fight replays on tape of Pacquiao's 12-round domination of his former victim, Antonio Margarito, last November, Mosley said he’s confident of tagging the smaller, lighter Filipino hero.

Mosley said that if the slower Margarito could land so many punches on Pacquiao, then all the more he could, with more devastating effect.

Even if in the course of the envisioned torrid exchanges of punches he’d wind up on the shorter end, Mosley said he would not mind for as long as he had done what should be done.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao sparred for 10 rounds at the Wild Card Gym here Tuesday afternoon with Mexican lightweight Raymundo Beltran and unbeaten American welterweight Shawn Porter (18-0).

A fired-up Pacquiao allowed Beltran to hit him deliberately in the body and ribcage.

Porter, on the other hand, was given a taste of the pyompang punch (hitting both ears at the same time with open palms), similar to the one Pacquiao employed against Joshua Clottey in a 12-round unanimous decision victory last year.

Among those present during the training session were show biz couple Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz.

ARIZA WORRIED THAT PACQUIAO IS PUSHING HIMSELF TOO HARD

Normally, trainers and strength and conditioning coaches tend to complain that fighters don’t train hard enough. But in the case of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao its just the opposite.

Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza told the Inquirer that while Pacquiao looks great “I just hope that he slows down a little bit. I’m really worried that he’s pushing too hard. He needs to be extra careful.”

Pacquiao sparred twelve rounds on Saturday, going six with welterweight Shawn Porter and three each with longtime sparring partners, lightweights Raymund Beltran (24-4, 16 KO's) and David Rodela (15-3-3, 6 KO's) who has a scheduled fight next week.

Ariza said “I think Pacquiao looks great man. He is really focused on this one and I don’t see tnhis fight going more than five or six rounds.”

The strength and conditioning guru who teamed up with celebrated trainer Freddie Roach some two weeks before Pacquiao scored a dominating 9th round stoppage to win the WBC lightweight title from David Diaz said Pacquiao has “too much pressure, too much power, his speed, his footwork. He looks very good.

Ariza said he has “never seen him like this for a long time.”

Even as he prepares for his WBO welterweight title defense against former three-time world champion Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 7, Pacquiao is excited about a career move of a different kind with the release of his CD single/DVD “Sometimes When We Touch.”

Pacquiao who sang the song in his TV appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show prior to his masterful conquest of the much bigger Antonio Margarito, Pacquiao used breaks during training to record the unforgettable, iconic ballad.

Pacquiao worked with the same production team that piloted the song to the top of the charts in 1977 with songwriter and original singer Dan Hill in his corner and producers Mathew McCauley and Fred Mollin

Initial reviews say Pacquiao “delivers a passionate performance that shows the warmth and courage in the boxer’s heart.” The CD/DVD will be available on April 28 at iTunes and Amazon.com while a preview is available on mannysings.com.

In a brief message to his millions of fans around the world Pacquiao said "you know I'm excited about the new album 'Sometimes When We Touch' with Dan Hill and I hope you are gonna like it."

How Manny Pacquiao stacks up

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Other than the most freakish fans of Floyd Mayweather Jr., nearly everyone regards Manny Pacquiao as the pound-for-pound king -- and for good reason. Pacquiao, the idol of the Philippines, is an active fighter who has regularly faced the best available competition for the past several years.

Pacquiao, with speed and power in both hands, has done everything a fighter can do -- and done so in electrifying style. He has also personified the notion of "pound-for-pound" by winning even as he has moved way up in weight. From flyweight to junior middleweight, Pacquiao is the only boxer in history to win belts in eight weight divisions, including a record four weight classes in which he has also claimed the lineal title. There are a lot of titles and divisions these days, but if it was so easy to do, wouldn't everyone be doing it? So far, only Pacquiao has.

His accomplishments have earned him three fighter of the year nods in four years from ESPN.com, Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America. The BWAA also voted Pacquiao as its fighter of the decade (2000-09), a most deserved honor.

Maybe he can't actually go back in time and fight the greats of yesteryear, but Pacquiao would at least be competitive with any fighter in history in his weight classes. And as a consolation, he can at least give us the one fight we all want to see, against Mayweather. Now we just need to get Mayweather to agree to it.

Roach admits Mosley won't be easy prey

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
MANILA, Philippines - It’s no joke when Freddie Roach says it’s not going to be an easy fight.

Contrary to what many people say, the hottest trainer in boxing firmly believes that Manny Pacquiao could be in for a big surprise against Shane Mosley on May 7.

Oddsmakers have Pacquiao as the 8-1 favorite, meaning that only way he could lose this battle is he climbs the ring at the MGM Grand with his hands tied to his waist.

But Roach, who never takes any fight, any fighter for granted, doesn’t think so.

“People are saying to Manny this is going to be an easy fight,” Roach told Fight Camp 360, a four-part series drumming up the highly anticipated welterweight clash.

“And I want to slap them in the face and say, ‘Don’t tell him (Pacquiao) that because it’s not an easy fight,’” added Roach, who nonetheless expects another victory for his Pinoy fighter.

Pacquiao said he can feel the pressure of people chalking up another victory for him even before the fight could start.

“Millions of fans are expecting my victory. There is pressure but I can handle that,” he said.

Roach said he’s expecting the best of Mosley on fight night, the same Mosley that defeated Oscar dela Hoya twice, and the same Mosley who knocked out Antonio Margarito in 2009.

Pacquiao turned Margarito’s face into a pulp last November, but failed to put the Mexican almost twice as big as Pacquiao, down during their 12-round contest.

“I’m excited about this fight because we know that Shane is going to bring it,” said Roach last week at his Wild Card Gym in Hollywood where Pacquiao held a media workout.

“The fight with Sugar Shane will not be easy. But my prediction is that Manny will win by knockout and become the first boxer to stop Mosley,” he said.

Bob Arum, the promoter, joined the sales talk.

“Nobody can count Shane Mosley out. He is a good, good fighter, especially when he fights an aggressive opponent like Manny Pacquiao,” he said.

Mosley trainer confident

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
MANILA, Philippines — Never at a loss for peppery quotes, trainer Naazim Richardson likens the upcoming world welterweight war between Manny Pacquiao and his guy Shane Mosley to a long-distance race.

“This is a marathon, its’ not a sprint. It’s not about who runs out the fastest. It’s gonna be who’s gonna finish up the proper way,” said Richardson, sounding upbeat that Mosley will outlast the seemingly-unstoppable Filipino star in their scheduled 12-rounder on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Despite the huge odds stacked against Mosley, the 39-year-old puncher insists he still has a lot of fight left in him as he revs up for his last chance at the bigtime since a loss would send him spiraling to the embarrassing level of a has-been.

Holed up in Big Bear, a high-altitude training camp around 100 miles from Los Angeles since early-March, Mosley has done nothing the past seven weeks but eat and breathe Pacquiao, something that has injected a sense of heavy optimism in his camp.

While Richardson remains tightlipped about their chances as he once praised Pacquiao to the high heavens as though Mosley will have to come up the ring with a crowbar that he will use to whack Pacquiao, Mosley sounds a bit more certain that he will “shock the world” next month.

“He hasn’t fought somebody like me,” said Mosley, who, even at his age, remains a livewire opponent owing to his vast experience, fast hands, punching power and durability.

To prepare for a best-conditioned and well-motivated Mosley, Pacquiao has also been doing his share in making sure he gets to keep his hold not only on the World Boxing Organization 147-lb title belt but on the mythical title--and most significant--of being the world’s pound-for-pound king.

Trainer Freddie Roach said this camp is the best and that he is looking forward to seeing Pacquiao become the first fighter to stop the iron-chinned Mosley.

Does God want Manny Pacquiao to win?

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Everyone who knows Manny Pacquiao, or follows Manny Pacquiao's career knows that he's a very relgious man. Pacquiao prays daily, and he does so publicly. He has a deep faith in God, and he always puts God first in his life. Christians believe that by doing so, they will be rewarded with eternal life in Heaven.

Many times in sports athletes will thank God before starting interviews and or they will credit God for their success. Many times athletes will Pray to God for a victory before a contest. That's a good thing, as this writer believes in God as well, but what about the opponent?

Manny's opponents believe in God too. What about them? Did God hear Manny's prayers louder? I'm sure Miguel Cotto or say a Ricky Hatton, or an Antonio Margarito all prayed for victory too. As we all know now, things didn't work out too good for them.

I have always wondered about this. Perhaps God doesn't grant these prayer requests. Perhaps he stands on the sidelines and just lets the best man win? Manny is no better or worse than say an Erik Morales. Not as far as being a human being. They are both good men, with morals and standards. Pacquiao is however a better fighter.

I do believe that God does reward those who deliver positive energy and goodness into the world. Pacquiao certainly does that and for his efforts he is blessed accordingly.

Mississippians are very spiritual people. We just had a United States Marine die in Afghanistan a few weeks ago. Thousands of locals lined the streets to honor the fallen Hero. His name was Staff Sgt Jason Rogers. He died while saving the lives of two other Marines. Jason lost his life, and yet two other men were spared. God works in mysterious ways indeed. See the video of Staff Sgt Rogers return home HERE

Pacquiao has had success beyond comprehension. Christians are not surprised by his success. Believers in Christ believe that for those who keep Jesus first in their life, they will be rewarded 7 fold. That seems to be the case with the Pacman so far doesn't it?

Mosley’s “Do or Die” and Pacquiao’s Prayer

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Shane Mosley has the stronger drive to win.

He is up to turn a tsunami like waves against him. Having a monstrous pile of people “belittlement” on his abilities to contend with and millions to gain (and gain even more) with almost nothing to lose but his life, Mosley is expected to approach the fight between him and Manny Pacquiao in a “do or die” beastly disposition.

Hence the Pacman cannot afford to be less hungry for a knockout win and be mentally complacent climbing up the canvas on May 7 however dense he stretched himself in training to condition his body and whatever affirmations his team would tell him.

Expect Sugar Shane on fight night to come at his strongest will ever to dominate and force the issue against Pacquiao inside the first five rounds because Mosley himself is concerned that after round five, he would have nothing left in his “reservoir” to turn the tide and make it possible not to suffer a knockout defeat at the hands of a great boxer with the best combination of crushing power and speed in the sport’s annals.

The people can only predict a sensational victory but only for one who is completely prepared and inspired enough, one who does it right even in his sub-conscious mind, dreaming about the outcome of the fight to be having a glorious end in his favor, to bow low and lift up a Name.

But as for Shane, it would be sweetest for him if he can weather the “firestorm” assaults coming from Manny’s faith-filled arsenal of blinding skills and overpowering counter attacks in response to Mosley’s early rounds aggressiveness and for Mosley to avoid a Hatton-like fall and remain on his toes until the last whisk of air he can puff away to survive the final round on shaky knees.

For the world to witness, that is, if Pacquiao’s “prayer” is heard again.

More images from the Wild Card: Pacquiao's sparring session and 'to do' list

While the crowded media that filled the Wild Card Boxing Club on Wednesday afternoon was nowhere to be found on Thursday, Top Rank photographer Chris Farina found a way to stick around as the Filipino star engaged in a sparring session inside of the facility.

For this camp Pacquiao has been sparring with the likes of Shawn Porter, David Rodela, Raymund Beltran, and newly-added Karim Mayfield. When I asked Pacquiao's strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza who had given his charge the best work for this particular camp and he was quick to point out that it was Porter who seemed to push him the hardest.

While Rodela and Beltran have had much experience sparring Pacquiao and Porter helped get him ready for his November 2009 date with Miguel Cotto, it is Mayfield who is a new fixture on the scene. Earlier this month the San Francisco native opened up about his time in camp, which saw the second leg kick off in early April, and during his second week he admitted that Pacquiao was getting more committed.

"Manny's definitely getting stronger. As the camp progresses he's starting to get the punch count up. I feel that I am getting stronger too so I am definitely keeping up the competition level for him," the 30-year old said.

The buzz is definitely building day by day and while some may not see this as a competitive fight it certainly is shaping up to be a huge event.

Alex Ariza shows serious concern over Manny Pacquiao possibly peaking too early

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
It had been a few months since I touched bases with strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza but I was happy to have spotted the Columbian native yesterday while inside of the Wild Card Boxing Club in Los Angeles for Manny Pacquiao's media day. Pacquiao is a few weeks away from the second defense of his WBO welterweight title and is reportedly running on all cylinders as his May 7th date with Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand approaches.

There has been nothing but glowing reports coming from Pacquiao's camp and I checked with Ariza to see how everything was progressing.

"I always say that I hate saying that something is perfect, knock on wood because you never know what's going to happen, but it couldn't be any better right now," said Ariza. "We're right on schedule now. I keep a little bit ahead of schedule. Hopefully with some things coming up it will give us a day or two during the week to take a day off here and there. Other than that I couldn't ask for anything more."

Sometimes when a fighter is in camp and performing at a high level they will peak too soon and leave some of their best stuff in the gym by the time the fight approaches. It has happened to the best of fighters and I got the sense that perhaps Ariza was worried as to whether Pacquiao was coming into his own a bit too soon.

"Of course I do," he continued. "I really do. I'm really worried about it right now. I mean, especially the way he's just been going through rounds and asking for more, more, more, and more. You just know that he's in that groove. He knows his body but I'm always the one that's thinking at some time you are going to have a break."

For this camp Pacquiao has said to have had some great sparring with the likes of Karim Mayfield, Raymund Beltran, David Rodela and Shawn Porter, whom is with the Filipino icon a second time following his overseas debut in the Philippines to help him prepare for his November 2009 clash with Miguel Cotto. Ariza confirmed that the sessions have been lively and that he has seen a change in the 23-year old Porter when I asked him who had stood out the most.

"The sparring sessions have been awesome. I think always it's going to be Shawn Porter. He's been with Manny only one time, and that was with Cotto, and he's made a vast improvement from when I saw him back in the day. So I , for sure, think that he's giving him the best work. But we have Beltran, who is also making a ton of improvement. Mayfield turned out to be really good as well," said Ariza.

This camp looks to be a huge contrast from Pacquiao's preparation for his fight with Antonio Margarito last November, as he was distracted by his duties as a congressman while in his native land in Baguio. In the fight against Margarito Ariza noted that Pacquiao took more punishment than he should have and even showed himself to be tired late in the fight.

It's something that stuck with Pacquiao and he seems set to not let it happen again.

"I like to think that was a lesson learned," said a reflective Ariza. "Maybe with not knowing that politics was going to be as difficult as it was and taking as much time as it did from him. It was one of those things that required a lot of time, a lot of thinking, and a lot of studying. Boxing just really wasn't balancing out at that time so we lost a lot of ground on that. So maybe you just realize during the fight that he didn't want to go through anything like that again."

Before ending our talk I asked Ariza whether he had seen his ex-charge Amir Khan perform this past weekend with his technical decision victory over Paul McCloskey in his native England. Ariza had been working with Khan for a few years but saw his relationship with the star severed after he got into a dispute with Amir's team over money in regards to his assistance for his December victory over Marcos Maidana.

Despite seeing that bridge burned, Ariza says that he has no hard feelings towards Khan, the WBA junior welterweight champion of the world.

"I did, I did. Of course I [saw his fight]. I don't have any ill wills towards the guy. I hope he wins and I don't want to see him get hurt or anything. But I don't need to say anything that hasn't been said about it."

That slick Irish American named Coach Freddie Roach has set the bar a tad too high for superstar Manny Pacquiao.

"I know that Shane's a very durable fighter and he's never been stopped before in his life. But I'm really urging and encouraging Manny to fight an ever faster pace and to push this guy. This is because I want Manny to make a statement," Roach told Boxingscene's Lem Satterfield.

In my opinion, and noting that I continue my own backscatching by reminding all how I picked Vicious Victor Ortiz to upset Andre Berto, I am a skeptic.

I don't think Pacman can or will stop the 39 year old Mosley on May 7.

Winky Wright couldn't do it in two tries. Ditto for Vernon Forrest. Ditto for Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather.

Sure, Mosley has 376 pro rounds under his belt but, when he loses he drops decisions (excluding the soporific draw with awkward Mora).

Ray Leonard and his camp used to call a used up fighter "a punched ticket."

Mosley, whose KO total matches his chronoligical age, is a semi-punched ticket. He didn't have the relfexes or tactics necessary to thump the less talented Mora but don't blame a guy for having trouble fighting an octopus.

Mosley did have, lest we forget, the skill, the stamina and the fortitude to last 36 minutes with Floyd Mayweather last May 1.

And, while he wobbled "Money" briefly in round two, he did not do much else. Filling out the scorecards was just a formality. Nobody held their breath awaiting Michael Buffer's recitation of the tallies.

No, I forecast that the proud man from Pomona will still be standing when 12 rounds are completed.

Mosley will be take his thumping but be on his feet when the wide point totals are announced just like a battered Antonio Margarito and the unwilling to mix it up Joshua Clottey were after the same 36 minute excursion through hell against Pacman.

You have to go back 25 Pacquiao rounds, to the Cotto stoppage of Nov. 14, 2009, for a Manny KO victory.

Then you look to the demolition of Ricky Hatton, the KO 2, in which Hatton led with his chin and was flattened like a bicycle in the path of a cement mixer.

Even in his dotage, Mosley remains more formidable than "Margacheato" and the pacifistic Clottey.

I will concede that Cotto has more in his tank than Mosley now but let's stick with horses for courses.

If Pacman can halt Mosley, it will come late, probably in the final three rounds.

But I don't think it will.

Pacquiao will make a statement allright, just not the KO with an exclamation point statement that Roach wants his prized pupil to aspire to.

Whitewash. Shutout. El Blanko.

It says here Pacman romps. It says here it's a wide UD 12 for Manny, along the lines of the Magrarito scoring (120-108 shutout, 119-109 and 118-110) and the Clottey ballots (120-108 shutout, two 119-109 votes).

Pacquiao will score a lot of runs but he won't hit a homer.

Pride and his more than decent defense will keep Mosley erect.

He won't need any Viagara to make it to the finish line standing up.

Beating Mosley in a more lopsided manner than Mayweather did?

Is this possible? Is this necessary?

Not really, it's just some of Roach's usual prefight blarney.

Pacquiao ready to spar for 12 rounds

MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao’s eight-week buildup for his May 7 fight with Shane Mosley reaches its climax this week when the Filipino fighter spars for 12 rounds — the most number in one day – against four punchers at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.

Pacquiao adviser Mike Koncz said Freddie Roach is back in Los Angeles after steering Amir Khan to victory over the weekend in Manchester, England, and got reunited with his prized pupil in the gym.

Pacquiao’s sparring sessions will hit its peak either Tuesday or Thursday, according to Koncz.

Shawn Porter, Karim Mayfield, David Rodela and Ray Beltran will take turns in going up the ring this week, which will be the most crucial in the entire training camp that kicked off in Baguio City in mid-March.

“Manny’s doing fine in training and everything’s been great,” said Koncz, stressing that “the sparring will be more intense this week.”

Slowly, Roach will cut down the number of rounds in the last two weeks and by the time Pacquiao travels to Las Vegas by land on May 2, he would have racked up more than 100 rounds of sparring.

The Mosley fight will be the 20th time that Roach will be in the corner of Pacquiao in a US ring.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao will host an open workout on April 20 at the Wild Card but the media won’t be able to see him bang bodies since it is a non-sparring day.

Mosley staged his own open workout for the media last week in Big Bear, California. Pacquiao is an overwhelming 6-1 favorite to retain his hold on the mythical pound-for-pound and World Boxing Organization welterweight crowns at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

FEARLESS FORECAST: PACQUIAO BY STOPPAGE OVER MOSLEY IN LATE ROUNDS

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Every boxing aficionado all over the world is focused on the upcoming fight of our very own WBO welterweight champion and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao against Shane Mosley on May 7, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

As the fight grow nearer, forecast grow in numbers. I for one who has the privilege to know Manny up close and personal and see how he trains and prepares for this match predicts this will be a great fight for the fans.

Mosley is a dangerous boxer and has an impressive record but his greatest handicap is his age. At age 40, he is no match to Manny's speed, agility, strength and footwork, who at age 32 is at the peak of his career while Mosley appears to be in a decline.

I predict Pacquiao to win by stoppage on the late rounds specifically from eight to twelve (8 to 12) rounds. Either the referee stops the fight or Mosley quits because he could no longer take much punishment for the hard hitting Pacquiao.

At the moment, I believe Pacquiao is still the greatest boxer in the world and he will reign for much longer and Mosley cannot grab that honor away.

The entire Philippine nation is proud to gain that foothold in world boxing history because of Manny Pacquiao -- only a person of great ability and most specially good heart can claim that honor.

To my friend, compadre, keep up the good work, we are behind you all the way. Good Luck. God Bless.

Mabuhay ka Manny! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

Shane Mosley — His Confidence Could Backfire on Him

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
Recent reports have quoted Shane Mosley as saying he will not settle for a points win against pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao when they meet atop the ring on May 7, 2011 at Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. He said he will knock Pacquiao out. Can he do it? Mosley, nearing 40, has a record that tends to support that possibility. The problem here is that he is facing somebody whose own record shows that the more dangerous an opponent becomes, the more likely that he is going to fall.

“Yeah, I think I’m going to knock him out,” Mosley told Boxingscene when asked about his thoughts on the upcoming fight. “I don’t know what round it’s going to be in. But it will come in the first round that I can catch him squarely on the chin.”

Confidence, of course, is the inner spark that ignites all possibilities. It does not guarantee anyone success; but without it, nobody stands a chance.

But just how justified is Mosley, who is a 8-1 underdog, in taking such a positive approach to the fight?

The past couple of weeks should make him and all underdogs happy. Three days ago, challengers Orlando Salido (bantamweight) and Victor Ortiz (welterweight) toppled odds-on favorite Juan Manuel Lopez and Andre Berto, respectively. A week earlier, three-division champion and future Hall of Famer Erik Morales also showed in his fight against highly-regarded Marcos Maidana that counting a “has-been” could be an embarrassing proposition. And, like Morales, Mosley is a three-division world champion and a future Hall of Famer himself. In his prime, Mosley bested Oscar de la Hoya, another great competitor, twice. The Ring Magazine has recognized him as pound for pound champion in 2000 and 2001 during which time he outclassed, aside from De La Hoya, Antonio Diaz, Shannon Taylor and Adrian Stone.

Mosley’s record—46 wins, 6 losses, 1 draw, 1 no contest and 39 KOs—indicated that he could box as much as he could punch. He thrived both in long-distance and close-range combat. He packed power in both hands. In my book, “Manny Pacquiao: A Story Bigger Than Boxing,” the list of the world’s greatest fighters of all time distinguishes Mosley as second only to Mike Tyson in the category of hard hitters. Tyson’s KO rate was 88 percent while Mosley came close at 85 percent. Mosley went 39 and 0 before losing to the late Vernon Forrest, his tormentor way back in their amateur days.

At the time (January 26, 2002) of Mosley’s first defeat to Forrest (he lost again in a rematch 6 months later), he was already on the 9th year of his boxing career, and relatively old at 31. Either he started to show signs of wear and tear or the competition for him had become tougher to overcome, but by then Mosley seemed to have ceased being the Mosley that he used to be. His winning average declined, winning “only” 8 in his next 14 ring battles. The last two—a decision loss to Floyd Mayweather and a draw against Sergio Mora (both in 2010) were particularly unimpressive that, in the eyes of many in media, should have been enough to dash whatever merit he had in landing a lucrative fight against the current draw of boxing.

But not to be dismissed is a little attribute to Mosley’s success inside the ring: he has a knack for winning fights many people thought he had little chances of winning. Although undefeated after 24 fights, he was an underdog when he challenged Philip Holiday (also undefeated after 31 fights), for the lightweight title on August 2, 1997. He was also underdog when he clobbered De La Hoya for the first time. And then, in 2009, he too was not given much of a chance against Antonio Margarito to reclaim his welterweight championship. In all cases, he proved the doubters wrong.

Moreover, Mosley has yet to lose in a lopsided contest, much less an abbreviated one. His losses could have been considered to be competitive up to the final second of each bout. A few more gasping flurries from him could have swung the decision in his favor, and avoided one or two blemishes in his record. While he has already lost 6 times, only 4 fighters have actually beaten him (two—Forrest and Ronald Wright—have defeated him twice).

Aside from Morales, boxing greats like Bernard Hopkins, Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Robinson have also shown remarkable success inside the ring at a time when they were supposed to have been past their prime. In 2006, Hopkins was already 41 and, like today’s Mosley, was far from impressive in his last two fights, having lost to Jermain Taylor twice in a row. But he came back to beat Antonio Tarver (the same man who had earlier beaten the great Roy Jones Jr twice) and, a year later in 2007, decisioned Ronald Wright.

In 1992, 41-year-old Roberto Duran lost his two previous fights (a UD loss to Sugar Ray Leonard in 1989 and a TKO 6 to Pat Lawlor in 1991), but came back to win his next 7 fights in a 2-year period.

In 1952, 31-year-old Sugar Ray Robinson lost by TKO to Joey Maxim in his attempt to win a world title at a higher division (from middleweight to light heavyweight), but came back to win his next fight by KO.

Hence if Mosley’s last two fights are indicative of his dwindling chances against the 32-year-old Pacquiao, the record of Morales and other boxing greats would seem to argue otherwise.

Unfortunately for Mosley, the possibility of his rising to the occasion might not augur well for his health, however.

Crowd favorite Manny Pacquiao has a total of 57 career fights. He has won 52 of them (38 via stoppage); lost three while 2 bouts ended in draws. Like almost all professional boxers who spend the first half of their careers honing their skills and building up their confidence (except probably Leon Spinks, who faced and defeated Muhammad Ali to take the latter’s world heavyweight title in only 7 professional fights), Manny’s first 24 fights could be considered to be easy fights for him, compared to his last 33 fights which, aside from being mostly title fights, involved physically bigger opponents.

Observers might think that Manny found no need to maim his relatively easy first 24 opponents, knocking out “only” 14 of the 23 he defeated (or a KO rate of 61 percent).

But when he started to chase a world crown in his 25th fight, against Thailand’s Chachai Sasakul for the latter’s WBC Flyweight belt, until his last fight against Margarito—where he faced not only future Hall of Famers in Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez but also bigger opponents in David Diaz, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey and Margarito—observers may also think that Manny Pacquiao felt there was a need to address a perceived threat with dispatch, knocking out 28 of his last 33 opponents (or a KO rate of 85 percent).

Against light opponents, Pacquiao entertains. But against dangerous opponents, Pacquiao rocks. The more Mosley succeeds in posing a threat, the more likely he will arouse the killer in his foe.

Why Mosley is dangerous

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
MANILA, Philippines - Even as defending WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has been installed a 9-1 favorite, he’s not taking Sugar Shane Mosley lightly in their 12-round bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 7 because all indications point to the classy boxer-puncher as a dangerous foe.

Here are some reasons why Mosley is a serious challenger.

• He has one-punch knockout power in either hand, particularly the right. In boxing, all it takes is a single connection and the fight could be over. Mosley boasts a knockout rate of 85 percent or 39 KOs of 46 wins, compared to Pacquiao’s 73 percent or 38 KOs of 52 wins.

• He’s the first African-American whom Pacquiao will face. If you’re not used to the rhythm and style of an African-American athlete, you could be in big trouble. Pacquiao has sparred with African-Americans like Shawn Porter, Rashad Holloway and Karim Mayfield but it’s a different atmosphere when the bell rings for a real fight on pay-per-view.

• He’s the only fighter to defeat the legendary Oscar de la Hoya twice.

• He’s the only fighter to knock out rugged Mexican warrior Antonio Margarito who went the distance with Pacquiao.

• He’s the only fighter to beat former world lightmiddleweight champion Fernando Vargas twice, both by knockout.

• He’s never been knocked out – all his losses were on points. And only Vernon Forrest was able to floor Mosley, doing it twice in the second round but Sugar Shane survived the threat to last the full route in losing a decision. In contrast, Pacquiao has been floored by Rustico Torrecampo, Medgeon 3-K Battery, Nedal Hussein, Serikzhan Yeshmagambetov and Marco Antonio Barrera (although the knockdown should’ve been ruled a slip as shown in a replay). Mosley’s strong chin is an obvious asset.

• He’s the “longest” fighter ever to battle Pacquiao with a startling 74-inch wingspan. That translates to a massive seven-inch reach advantage for Mosley. Two Pacquiao victims, Margarito and De la Hoya, both measure 73 inches in wingspan.

• He’s comfortable fighting in the 147-pound division. Mosley has weighed over 142 pounds for 22 bouts since 1999. Pacquiao has fought in only four fights weighing over 142 since 2008. Pacquiao scaled 142 pounds for De la Hoya, 144 for Miguel Cotto, 145 3/4 for Joshua Clottey and 144 1/2 for Margarito. Mosley will likely weigh five to 10 pounds more than Pacquiao when they square off. The edge in heft may be an advantage or a disadvantage for Mosley.

• He’s trained by the legendary Nazim Richardson who also takes care of Bernard Hopkins and IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham. Richardson is known in fight circles as a master strategist and tactician. Although he is not as renowned as Freddie Roach, Richardson can’t be considered a slouch. He’s an expert in spotting flaws and exploiting weaknesses. He’s a whiz in revving up old engines and transforming them into mean machines. To Richardson, age is all in the mind. Hopkins, his other ageless gladiator, remains competitive at 46.

• He’s intelligent and crafty. Mosley used a classic boxing style to confound De la Hoya, not once but twice. He even switch-hit to confuse the Golden Boy. Against Pacquiao, Mosley is expected to put pressure on the Filipino icon and force a slugfest. Mosley’s deadliest combination is a left hook to the body and a right hook to the head. Sugar Shane once said he emulates Roberto Duran in the ring.

• He has experience on his side. Mosley turned pro in 1993, two years before Pacquiao, and has boxed 376 rounds in 53 fights. Pacquiao has boxed 329 rounds in 57 bouts. Mosley has engaged in 19 world title matches and Pacquiao, 16. Mosley racked up a record of 38-0, with 35 KOs, before tasting his first defeat nine years after turning pro. Pacquiao raced to an 11-0 record, with only three KOs, before suffering his initial setback to Torrecampo in 1996.

• He knows how to deal with southpaws. Mosley has battled five lefthanders in his career and lost to only one – Winky Wright. Against Luis Collazo, he scored a knockdown and breezed to an easy victory on points.

• He fights like Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao had difficulty against the Mexican in two bouts. Marquez, a technician, counter-punched and repeatedly found an opening for his right hand down the middle, into the heart of Pacquiao’s defense. Mosley will try to do the same on May 7.

• He’s still got heart. Against Sergio Mora last September, Mosley defied the laws of aging and turned back the hands of time to win the final two rounds in salvaging a 12-round split draw in Los Angeles. Sugar Shane’s display of endurance was an inspiration to all senior citizens.

Jeff Ryan of The Ring Magazine put the fight in perspective when he wrote: “At a battle-scarred 32 years of age and following 16 years in the ring, 57 fights, and a jump of about 40 pounds in weight throughout his career, Pacquiao is due to turn old overnight or at the very least, have an off-night, particularly if the absence of a Floyd Mayweather fight robs him of some motivation and his political career in the Philippines becomes more of a distraction...and if that night arrives this May, Mosley (even a 39-year-old version in decline) has the game, experience, strength, and chin to make things interesting.”

So in the final analysis, the Pacquiao-Mosley fight couldn’t be as one-sided as the odds indicate.

Ariza works on Pacquiao

The one week without chief trainer Freddie Roach has given strength and conditioning expert Alex Ariza chance to concentrate on giving world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao extra weight in preparation for his coming title-retention fight with American challenger “Sugar” Shane Mosley.

With Roach in Manchester, England to be in the corner of another ward, super-lightweight kingpin Amir Khan, in his successful title defense over Paul MacCloskey, Ariza and Pacquiao worked on strengthening the latter’s muscles needed in his May 7 encounter against the bigger, heftier Mosley, a three-division champ himself.

“Of course we continued his sparring sessions three times last week, but we spent more time on getting back to plyometrics and isometrics stuff which we will try to continue until next week,” Ariza said by way of assessing the gains the eight-division belt owner accomplished.
Plyometrics is a system that provides functional weights for more explosive, quick movements and power to an individual doing the rhythm.

“It’s functional weights we’re putting on as opposed to aesthetically building muscles provided by conventional lifting of weights,” the Colombian conditioning expert explained. “In aesthetic stuff, you see, you look good, you look great, But it doesn’t mean you’re conditioned.”

“Anybody can look aesthetically great, but it doesn’t appear that way. Underneath is where truth lies,’ he stressed.

Another factor the conditioning regimen, especially the warming up portion, is targeting is to make as many muscles as possible to be functional and get involved in coordination with the hands, eyes and feet.

“And I’m happy to say that everything has gone well at Wild Card even sin the absence of Freddie. Manny has stayed focused the whole week as in the past weeks. We haven’t really skipped a bit and Manny’s looking really sharp,” be observed.
Pacquiao, for his part, said in the absence of Roach, assistant trainer and long-time buddy Buboy Fernandez took care of doing the routine mitts with him with Nonoy Neri taking charge of his diet on orders of Ariza.

Although Pacquiao had somewhat slowed down on the boxing aspect of preparations, sparring partners Karim Mayfield and Shawn Porter continued providing with the necessary pointers in in-fighting and keeping him ag a distance to his opponent.
Mayfield, Ariza said, has a similar styles with Mosley besides possessing, too, with a big right hand as the Pacman’s challenger, but added that Porter having Pacquiao’s mate in his preparations against Miguel Cotto three years ago, is giving the title-defender the better workout.

“Porter has been with us for a while and, therefore,, giving us the best work. He’s familiar with Manny and he has improved a lot since the first time we were together,” Ariza said

Pacquiao right on target, says Buboy

FIGHT CAMP 360 PACQUIAO VS MOSLEY, PACQUIAO VS MOSLEY, PACQUIAO VS MOSLEY NEWS, PACQUIAO VS MOSLEY ONLINE LIVE STREAMING, PACQUIAO VS MOSLEY UPDATES
MANILA, Philippines – Save for his big boss’s first two fights on United States shores, Buboy Fernandez has been lending a hand to Freddie Roach in taking charge of Manny Pacquiao’s corner since 2002.

So when Fernandez, whose association with Pacquiao stretches back to the days of the old Team Pacquiao, says his childhood chum is right on target, you better believe him.

Fernandez said Pacquiao is on cue with three weeks remaining before the May 7 welterweight war with Shane Mosley and that the training of the pound-for-pound king hardly misses a beat.

“Walang tayong kaba sa laban,”said Fernandez said from Los Angeles.

Fernandez wasn’t actually bragging when he uttered those words since he has been assisting Roach the past few weeks and is the man in charge in the brief absence of the Wild Card guru.

Roach left for England earlier in the week to call the shots in the corner of British star Amir Khan, who has a fight scheduled Saturday in Manchester.

Pacquiao adviser Mike Koncz said Roach will be back at the Wild Card on Monday to resume training the 32-year-old Pacquiao.

Of course, Fernandez is not basing his assessment of Pacquiao’s winning chances on sheer friendship alone as he has been doing his homework by studying Mosley’s fights almost every single night before he goes to bed.

Asked if he has already placed his bet, Fernandez brushed the suggestion aside.

“Ang importante ay manalo,” said Fernandez, who is not at all bothered by the 6-1 odds that favor Pacquiao.

Based on what Fernandez has been seeing in the gym, it appears that Pacquiao’s lofty billing among oddsmakers could really be fit and proper.

Fernandez made his US debut as an assistant to Roach when Pacquiao faced Jorge Eliecer Julio underneath the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson clash at the Pyramid Arena in Memphis.

Although he had been with Pacquiao even before Pacquiao staged his rousing US debut in June 2001, Fernandez only got the opportunity to go to the US after the late promoter Rod Nazario facilitated his travel documents.

Fernandez was not around when Pacquiao bludgeoned Lehlo Ledwaba and drew with Agapito Sanchez but made his American debut during the Julio fight.

Meanwhile, Pacqiuao had to skip training Friday (Saturday in Manila) because he had to fulfill several medical requirements in relation to the fight.

“It’s the usual medical examinations that he takes,” said Koncz, who joined Pacquiao to a medical facility in the neighboring city of San Pedro.

The one-day break could might even be good for Pacquiao since he had gone 10 rounds in sparring on Thursday.

“Everything’s just great about his training,” said Koncz.

Former champ picks Pacquiao over Mosley

Fight Camp 360 Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Mosley News, Pacquiao vs Mosley Online Live Streaming, Pacquiao vs Mosley Updates
When thousands of Filipino boxing fans converge in the gambling mecca of Las Vegas for Manny Pacquiao's World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title match against former three-division champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand, former light welterweight champion Morris East will have already settled in.

The 36-year-old native of Olongapo City, Philippines has been based in the Sin City since 2002, working as a trainer and coach. Reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) light welterweight title holder Zab Judah is among the boxers he currently coaches.

Just like most experts in the boxing community, East feels that the 39-year-old Mosley (46-6-1, 39 knockouts) of Pomona, Calif. is out of his depth against the 32-year-old fighting congressman Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO) from General Santos City.

"It's going to be tough fight, though. But from my point of view, I feel it's going to be 'Pacman' [who wins]," said East, who stopped Akinobu Hiranaka in 1992 to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight title — a fight that earned the Ring Magazine's Knockout of the Year accolade that year.

East said that he feels Mosley is way past his prime. "Mosley has slowed down a bit. He's not the same compared to his younger years."

East, who retired in 1995 with a record of 20-4 (12 KO), said that the likelihood is that Pacquiao will stop Mosley for the first time in his career, although he still sees a bit of hope for the underdog.

"If he's (Mosley) able to keep up with Pacquiao's speed and get to start out the round first, then he'll have the advantage."

If the rest of the boxing world believes that Pacquiao has nothing left to prove, East is in the minority.

Despite Pacquiao laying claim to championships in eight divisions, East feels that Pacquiao is only the second greatest Filipino boxer of all time, behind 1920s flyweight great Francisco "Pancho Villa" Guilledo.

"Villa had over 100 wins and he really made history first, being a Filipino and Asian," said East. "He basically broke barriers."

Still, while East probably would have preferred to see Pacquiao-Mosley five years ago, he can't help but look forward to the high-profile event.

"I get excited and proud, especially since I also paved the way for young boxers to strive to become famous," said East. "Also, I get to see all the other boxers, past and new. It's like a fraternity reunion." - JVP, KY, GMA News
