MANILA, Philippines - World champion Manny Pacquiao arrived in Manila on Wednesday, eager to start his training for the May 7 showdown with “Sugar” Shane Mosley in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao returned to Manila with his wife, Jinkee Pacquiao, after a press tour in Los Angeles.
The Filipino boxing icon said he will start warming up next week in General Santos City for a 2-month training.
Pacquiao, who also sits as congressman of Sarangani Province, said he will have to report for work at the House of Representatives and spend some time with his family before he goes through another rigorous training program.
After warming up in General Santos City, Pacquiao said he will officially start training with coach Freddie Roach in Baguio City either March 8 or March 9.
On April 2, he will fly to Los Angeles with Roach for the last leg of the training.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, declined to predict that he will knock down Mosley.
“Hindi naman ako nagpa-predict eh. Ibibigay lang natin ang ating makakaya. Kung maitumba, bonus na lang iyon dahil sa pag-eensayo ng matindi (I’m not predicting anything. I will just do whatever I can during the fight. If I knock him down, that would just be a big bonus for my training so hard),” Pacquiao said before his plane touched down in Manila.
Odds makers see Pacquiao as a 7-1 favorite over Mosley, a former world champion who has won several welterweight titles.
This means that every $700 bet placed on Pacquiao will only yield $100 while a $350 bet on Mosley will get $500.
Even action star Steven Seagal is placing his bet on Pacquiao.
"He will [beat] Mosley by the 3rd round,” said Seagal, an aikido black-belter. “I'll always bet for him. He’s my brother.”
After a recent visit to the White House, Pacquiao said that US President Barack Obama also promised to cheer for him during the fight.
Pacquiao said that Obama told him that he would watch the fight live at the White House.
